Become our next District 3 Intern!

Students at the graduate, undergraduate, and high school senior level are invited to apply for an internship opportunity with Councilmember Peralez’s Office. This unpaid internship position provides students with a work opportunity and learning experience in the day-to-day operations of a city council office. Service hours, academic credits at the discretion of your university, and a letter of recommendation are available upon completion of the term. Student interns are expected to have a willingness to learn and apply their academic and professional training to the required job assignments.


The essential function of the job may vary from student to student to assist with duties such as:

-Responding to inquiries from residents
-Preparing materials for City Council meetings
-Special research projects
-Working with other City departments
-Aiding other team members with their tasks
-Planning community events
-Communications and social media activities


Education and Experience: Current enrollment in an accredited university, college, or high school senior level of education. Student interns have flexible hours to work around their school schedules. Graduate interns generally work between 20-40 hours per week, undergrad interns work between 10-20 hours per week and, high school interns work between 5-10 hours per week, unless otherwise agreed upon between student and the Office of the Councilmember.

-Knowledge and ability to use computers and related applications
-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others
-Ability to carry out oral and written instructions to completion
-Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
-Willingness to adhere to the Core Values of the Office of Councilmember Peralez

Wall of Interns

Thy Luong
Thy Luong is currently a student at Notre Dame High School. She is a native of San Jose and identifies strongly with her Vietnamese-American heritage. In her free time, she loves to do musical theatre, draw, and read anything from lengthy fantasy sagas to manga. Thy is involved in various social justice organizations and student government, which fuel her passion for equity and education. She is excited to expand her horizons while interning with the District 3 Office.

Lucinda Wolcott (2020-2021)
Lucinda Wolcott was born and raised in San Jose and served as the District 3 Intern for 2020-2021. In this role she served the community she knew and loved to learn about local government. She was a senior at Lincoln High School and is involved in many extracurricular activities. She is a four-year member of the varsity swim team and a three-year member of the varsity waterpolo team. She also sings in the advanced jazz choir and is a co-president of the Tri-M Music Honors Society club this year. She will be attending University of Ohio in the Fall of 2021. Message from Councilmember Peralez: “I had the pleasure of meeting Lucinda when she was still in elementary school as we were neighbors in the Rosemary Gardens neighborhood. She was impressive then and even more so now. It’s an honor to have her join our team and we look forward to many great things ahead for her.”

LaToya Fernandez (2017)
LaToya was born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut and became a District 3 resident in 2009. Latoya began her career with Rocketship Education, where she excelled as a top performing English Language Arts Teacher. During her five-year career with Rocketship, LaToya designed and implemented a social justice based curriculum for students in grades k-5; this curriculum built awareness and called upon students to advocate for equity and justice in their communities. LaToya is the Founder of a local Nonprofit Queenhype; an empowerment movement for girls and women in San José. With a focus on positive body image, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-awareness; members can face obstacles and come out strong in partnership with their communities and each other.

Lorin Camargo (2017)
Lorin was born and raised in South San José. She is a graduate of San Francisco State University, where she studied Apparel Design and Merchandising. Following graduation, Lorin lived in New York, where she worked in fashion production, and as a freelance seamstress and sewing instructor. Lorin realized an interest in community building after taking part in a Civic Hackathon which aimed to solve community issues in a low-income neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. Lorin is a volunteer member for Code for San José and Catalyze SV, both local organizations that work toward civic improvement through innovation and community engagement.

Raphael Villagracia (2015-2016)
Born and raised in the Philippines, Raphael Villagracia was a high school intern for the D3 Office for ten months almost immediately after he moved to the U.S. He’s currently studying Political Science at De Anza College where he hopes to transfer out by the 2018-2019 school year pursuing the same Major. He is working to address student issues on campus by serving on student government as the Legislative Affairs Officer and and off campus as part of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. He also works with TRANSITion De Anza and serves on the Environmental Sustainability Committee to address transit and environmental issues in the De Anza College community. Interning for the District 3 Office was an integral part of his introduction to american politics that has set him on the path for student advocacy. Being grateful and enjoying the community, he happily returns to occasionally volunteer for D3 events.
